Out with the old, in with the new

A little old lady knelt in church saying a sweet soft prayer.

"Dear Lord, This has been a tough four to five years. You have taken my favorite actor Patrick Swayze. My favorite musician Michael Jackson. My favorite Blues Singer Amy Winehouse. My favorite actress Elizabeth Taylor. My favorite singer Whitney Houston. And now my favorite author Tom Clancy!

I just wanted you to know that my favorite politicians are Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid. Amen"

May 2014 bring your favorite things to life and your least favorite things into this old lady's sights!

Welcome to My Web Site

Happy Hiram Unleashed
The skies have changed, the road bends
the time comes to break out on our own.
We'll miss some enemies, and some friends
But life is a journey we must all go alone.

If I can bring a smile or laugh to your face
or make you pissed off (As only I know how!)
then joy and energy can alight on this place
and Hiram can unleash, unfetter, and unbow.

This past week in all things Hiram:

Helikon Haven has had HIV information Week, with posts from the HIV Awareness Sonnet Contest{ Day 6Day 5,  Day 4, Day 3, Day 2, Day 1 }

You say Benwa-ing and I said Benoi-ing; Benwa, Benoi, Benoi, lets call the whole thing off!

and...

Peter (as the account Polish) showing off his anti-women stance (Three of the top five viewed posts in my rants section are about Peter. That and my rants section has twice the views of my other sections mean, more about Pete to come. Benwa, Benwa. Who knows? Learning about how to avoid being victimized by him online MIGHT become a cottage industry!)

HIV information Sonnet Contest

Helikon Haven HIV Awareness Week:
Day 5:Abstinence and Fighting Ignorance
Day 6: Hope and Strength
The above was the contest winner! Congrats Roann!

After someone in Yahoo Answers posted an asinine and disgusting attempt at "AIDS (mis-) Education" I thought about my ancient history as an AIDS educator in the early 1990's and that I haven't thought much about the issue of late.

I'd like to remedy that with an "HIV information Sonnet Contest". Below is the information I would like contestants to use in their sonnets. That can use all or some and include other useful information that they would like to add.

I'd like to remedy that with an "HIV information Sonnet Contest". Below is the information I would like contestants to use in their sonnets. That can use all or some and include other useful information that they would like to add.

v  HIV has not been cured but for many it can be managed for a long time.

v  Infections continue to increase and it is estimated that as many as 207,00 people in the US are infected with the virus and do not know it.

v  50,000 people a year in this country show up at their doctors with previously  undiagnosed cases of HIV.

v  Although women are 13 times more likely to contract HIV from their sexual  partners, men are in a much higher risk group because of IV drug use and unprotected male to male sex.

v  Having or getting an undiagnosed sexually transmitted disease (STD) can double your risk for infection from unprotected sex, possibly because the virus may "piggyback" on the disease transmission.

v  There IS NO Cure for HIV. Treatments for some individuals are not effective or less effective at preventing the devastating effects of this immune system destroying disease.

v  HIV is preventable by using condoms, not sharing IV drugs and avoiding contact with infected blood or other infected bodily fluids. You cannot get it from sweat, spit,  a handshake or being around persons with HIV.

I will post the contest in Yahoo Answers and (if they agree to be posted) the winner's sonnet will appear in Helikon Haven next week.

Hiram's "Handy" Sonnet Guide

Here is how you do it. Find seven sets of rhymes based on your hands.

Two rhymes for pinks (or fingertips)
Thinks/Winks, Drinks/Stinks, Ships/Trips Flips/Dips

Two rhymes for rings (or ring-finger)
Sings/Swings Wings/Brings Linger/Anger Kings/Things

Two rhymes for middle (or center)
Little/Fiddle Mentor/Centaur Letter/Better Whittle/Riddle

Two rhymes for pointer (or index)
Banter/Ranter Next/Text Hexed/Vexed

Two rhymes for Thumbs
Numb/Dumb Some/Come Hum/Strum From/Sum

Since we are sitting down, two rhymes for knee (or knees)
We/See Be/Flee Trees/Breeze Sneeze/Wheeze

Lastly two rhymes for eye (or eyes)
Why/Lie Try/Die Surprise/Wise  Eyes/Thighs

Okay now we start each line with the words "Iamb" (EYE-amb) except we say something different that has two beats like Iamb, first hard and then soft.

We count this word on our pinky finger and each following two beats on the rest  of our fingers going "tip-gully-tip-gully" like so:

EYE -    amb       EYE -    amb    EYE -    amb    EYE -    amb     EYE     SHIPS

or for example

I      roam      the     docks   and     seek     you     on    the        SHIPS

and then:

A -      mid       salt-      y      mists    your     fra-    grance    LING-   ERS

If you have trouble fitting in the beats, often adding  "just" or "some" or taking out or adding "a", "the" or "and" which will straighten it out. Above Salty is backwards

A -      mid       the      salt-      y      mists    your   scent    LING-   ERS

The rhymes go:

One hand - Pinks
One hand – Mids
One hand thumbs
One hand - Rings
One hand – Index
One hand knees
One hand - Pinks
One hand – Mids
One hand thumbs
One hand - Rings
One hand – Index
One hand knees

13th line – Eyes Last line – Eyes

Follow this "rule of hand" and you will find you have made a sonnet! Lines can also go down up, just start "off" the pinky and finish "on" the thumb instead of beyond it.

Have fun!

What's New in Hiramiana!

I have had a recent brush up with Yahell again.

Aside from the three accounts that are blocked by Answers, they tried to freeze my other accounts by not recognizing the passwords (which are programmed into my computer) My original account a year ago had suspicious activity (1500 "messages" sent out of it in machine code.)

My struggles with Yahoo: Barbie and Lovely Speak!
My answer to their "tell us how we are doing" questionare: A Letter to Yahoo

Also check out the new book with poetry by Dave, Cassie58, Schultzie, Cheesie, LC, Liz, Nancy and many more (not to mention, ME!): Forged by Fire

I hope you are all having a wonderful late winter/early spring!
