This past week in all things Hiram:

Helikon Haven has had HIV information Week, with posts from the HIV Awareness Sonnet Contest{ Day 6Day 5,  Day 4, Day 3, Day 2, Day 1 }

You say Benwa-ing and I said Benoi-ing; Benwa, Benoi, Benoi, lets call the whole thing off!

and...

Peter (as the account Polish) showing off his anti-women stance (Three of the top five viewed posts in my rants section are about Peter. That and my rants section has twice the views of my other sections mean, more about Pete to come. Benwa, Benwa. Who knows? Learning about how to avoid being victimized by him online MIGHT become a cottage industry!)

HIV information Sonnet Contest

Helikon Haven HIV Awareness Week:
Day 5:Abstinence and Fighting Ignorance
Day 6: Hope and Strength
The above was the contest winner! Congrats Roann!

After someone in Yahoo Answers posted an asinine and disgusting attempt at "AIDS (mis-) Education" I thought about my ancient history as an AIDS educator in the early 1990's and that I haven't thought much about the issue of late.

I'd like to remedy that with an "HIV information Sonnet Contest". Below is the information I would like contestants to use in their sonnets. That can use all or some and include other useful information that they would like to add.

v  HIV has not been cured but for many it can be managed for a long time.

v  Infections continue to increase and it is estimated that as many as 207,00 people in the US are infected with the virus and do not know it.

v  50,000 people a year in this country show up at their doctors with previously  undiagnosed cases of HIV.

v  Although women are 13 times more likely to contract HIV from their sexual  partners, men are in a much higher risk group because of IV drug use and unprotected male to male sex.

v  Having or getting an undiagnosed sexually transmitted disease (STD) can double your risk for infection from unprotected sex, possibly because the virus may "piggyback" on the disease transmission.

v  There IS NO Cure for HIV. Treatments for some individuals are not effective or less effective at preventing the devastating effects of this immune system destroying disease.

v  HIV is preventable by using condoms, not sharing IV drugs and avoiding contact with infected blood or other infected bodily fluids. You cannot get it from sweat, spit,  a handshake or being around persons with HIV.

I will post the contest in Yahoo Answers and (if they agree to be posted) the winner's sonnet will appear in Helikon Haven next week.
